“Siera Leoni’s President Announces Disarming of Security Forces in Freetown, Vows Accountability”

Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio has announced that the capital city’s security forces in Freetown have been disarmed. In a national TV address, Bio vowed to ensure that those responsible are held accountable and reassured the nation that they have overcome this challenge. The government had previously declared that the security forces regained control of the military barracks in Freetown, which had been targeted by rebel fighters attempting to seize the weapons depot. Gunshots were heard in the city, and residents reported smoke and military vehicles. Former President Ernest Bai Koroma claimed that a detained soldier stationed at his residence had mysteriously disappeared. In response to the disarming, the government has asked the international community to relocate peacekeepers from the military base.
