“Papua-New Guinea Declares State of Emergency as Ulawun Volcano Eruption Affects Over 13,000 People”

Papua-New Guinea authorities have declared a state of emergency following the eruption of Ulawun volcano, affecting more than 13,000 people. According to Radio New Zealand, on November 20, the volcano eruption resulted in the evacuation of over 13,000 residents from villages in the western regions of New Britain Island to four medical centers in Biala city.

The eruption has caused a significant amount of ash to be deposited in the western regions of New Britain Island, leading to road closures and disruptions in air transportation. While the authorities do not have specific information regarding casualties, they emphasize the urgent need for humanitarian assistance for those affected.

To address the aftermath of the eruption, the government has established an operational base, receiving financial and material support through international cooperation.
