“Yerevan’s Residential Complexes Lag Behind in Fire Safety Measures, Deputy Mayor Acknowledges”

In Yerevan, a multi-story building with 213 apartments is being equipped with fire alarm networks during the construction of residential complexes. The Deputy Mayor of Yerevan for Urban Development and Land Management, Yakov Ashatrian, announced this during a session of the Yerevan City Council’s executive committee on November 20. This number of apartments has been recorded in the administrative districts of the city.

Currently, a total of 11 objects in Yerevan are equipped with fire alarm networks. However, since September 1, 287 violations of the rules for the organization of fire safety have been discovered. Tigran Avinyan, the Deputy Prime Minister, criticized the situation, stating that the percentage of buildings with fire alarm networks is very low. He emphasized that the executive bodies of the administrative districts should be more proactive in ensuring fire safety.

Yakov Ashatrian acknowledged that one of the problems is the size of the fine imposed for violations, which ranges from 70,000 to 100,000 drams (approximately $145 to $205). Despite multiple checks, some constructors have failed to complete the necessary measures, indicating that the current disciplinary measures are not sufficient. Ashatrian mentioned that changes will be made to the standard of disciplinary measures to make them more effective.

Tigran Avinyan disagreed with increasing the amount of fines at the moment, stating that the constructors need to understand the existing decision and its implications. He emphasized that the Yerevan City Hall is one entity and that constructors cannot evade their responsibilities. Avinyan assured that the city will carefully monitor their work and organization to ensure compliance with fire safety regulations.
