US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin Arrives in Kiev to Reaffirm Support Against Russian Aggression

The US Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin, arrived in Kiev to reassure Ukrainian leaders of continued support in their fight against Russian aggression. During his visit, Austin met with US Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink and US military attaché Brigadier General Philip Kilner. US NATO representatives stated that Austin’s visit aimed to discuss winter operations and plan assistance for the country’s security amid the ongoing conflict. Security cooperation was highlighted as a crucial tool, with the Pentagon emphasizing that an increase in US forces participating in Operation Atlantic Resolve did not mean a diversion elsewhere.

While in Kiev, Austin will engage in talks with Ukraine’s senior leadership and the Ukrainian military high command. These discussions will cover joint military exercises between the United States and Ukraine, as well as the provision of lethal aid from the United States to Ukraine. Austin will also be attending the 17th meeting of the Contact Group on Security Cooperation in Ukraine in Victoria, Canada later this week.
