“Tensions Rise in Yerevan as Protesters Demand Participation in Picket”

Protesters in Yerevan are expressing their frustrations over being denied the opportunity to participate in their planned picket. During a meeting with journalists, Sargis Khandanyan, the president of the AFA Foreign Relations Committee and director of the Armenian delegation in PACE, discussed the reasons behind this decision. He mentioned that Ganira Pashayeva, the head of the Azerbaijani delegation to PACE, claimed that the anti-Armenian policy pursued by the Azerbaijani authorities was one of the contributing factors. Pashayeva believes that Azerbaijan’s actions are against the interests of Armenia.

Khandanyan stated, “I believe it is very difficult for representatives of a regime that is ethically assassinating in the CSTO to come and stay comfortably in Armenia. Yes, they are looking for excuses, and I am aware that our other partners have tried to prevent the visit of our colleagues and other delegations to Armenia, but as you can see, they have not succeeded.”

It is worth noting that the autumn session of the PACE Bureau is currently taking place in Yerevan, from November 18 to November 20. The session is being held at the Aram Khachaturian Concert Hall, named after Karen Demirchyan. Discussions during this session will revolve around the role of PACE “at a time when internal and external threats to democracy are growing.” The agenda also includes topics such as the fight against corruption and the protection of minority rights.

Approximately 50 delegations, consisting of around 300 members from nearly 50 countries, are expected to participate in the session. The host for this event is the National Assembly of Armenia.
