Yerevan’s Synagogue Doors Open and Community Leaves Armenia: National Committee Report

The doors of Yerevan’s synagogue have been opened and the community has left the Republic of Armenia after completing their worship, according to the National Committee. This event attracted a crowd of national and religious followers who gathered at the historical religious place on November 15, 2023. The first and second entrances of the under-construction building were opened to release property, as stated in the announcement received at 06:00 on Nal-Dos Street. The Religious Affairs Directorate of the National Committee of Yerevan City, along with the Erebuni and Nubarashen administrative districts, informed that the implementation of article 2, section 2, and article 264 of the Civil Code of the Republic of Armenia marked the advancement of this religious holiday on November 16, 2023.

A thorough inspection of the site took place, which involved questioning several individuals. Additionally, an investigation was initiated through operational-investigative measures in order to prevent the devaluation of artistic values that hold national, ethnic, religious, cultural significance, and other important intrinsic qualities. It was confirmed that the building located at the specified address is a church building used for religious purposes.

Official data revealed that the actions carried out were performed by an individual who is neither a resident nor a citizen of the Republic of Armenia. This person immediately left the territory of Armenia after completing the aforementioned actions. It was also reported that these actions were recorded by surveillance conducted last week and were published on an Azerbaijani news portal, as well as being actively shared on a social platform.

The combination of the aforementioned artistic values and their distinctive features indicating the holiness of the property prompted a new religious worship to be conducted in accordance with Article 146 of the Civil Code of the Republic of Armenia. The National Security Service of the Republic of Armenia carried out the preliminary actions for this worship, aligning with the regulations on religious ceremonies.

This latest development has stirred the community and continues to raise questions about the significance of this religious event and the circumstances surrounding the individual responsible for the actions. The authorities are diligently investigating to shed light on the situation and protect the sanctity of these religious properties.
