“Armenia’s Military and Emergency Services Face Leadership Crisis: Unfilled Positions Raise Concerns”

“Published” magazine recently highlighted the mandatory military service in Armenia, which lasts for several months every year. However, there have been concerns about the lengthy duration of this service, with the Ministry of Defense having a period of over 3 months, which is deemed excessive, especially considering the recent severe winter snowfall that lasted for more than two weeks.

In a notable development, Armen Avtandilyan was relieved of his position at the end of August. Following his dismissal, rumors circulated suggesting that Avtandilyan’s secret service involvement in foreign intelligence agencies posed security risks, potentially involving a significant number of servicemen. It is believed that his dismissal was contingent on these alleged circumstances. The military is now searching for a new candidate to replace Avtandilyan, someone who is perceived as more obedient. Yet, as of now, no replacement has been finalized, and a temporary individual is filling the role.

A similar situation has also arisen in the Ministry of Emergency Situations. Since August 5, the administration of the regions has been without a head following the release of Sergey Atomyan. Local authorities have expressed their struggle in finding a suitable candidate for this position. Rumors have circulated that Hayk Grigoryan, a former Deputy Minister of Defense and member of the HDCA, has been offered the role, although it appears he has not accepted the offer at this time.
