Armenia Acquires Zen Anti-Drone System from India: A Potential Game-Changer in Unmanned Aerial Warfare

Armenia has acquired the Zen Anti-Drone System (ZADS) from India, a mobile system designed to counter unmanned aerial vehicles. Military analyst Leonid Nersisyan mentioned that the system differs from the Russian “Krasukha” system as it focuses on enemy designated systems. Although the system has not been used in military operations, Nersisyan believes it shows promise based on the descriptions provided. He emphasized the importance of conducting thorough research before purchasing the system. The ZADS consists of various components, including optical-electronic modules, radar, and radio-electronic systems for suppressing enemy systems. In addition, the system can potentially integrate French radars.

Regarding Russian technology, Nersisyan stated that the previously acquired “Repelent” system was expensive and relatively ineffective during the recent 44-day war. Instead, the “Field 21” system, which disabled enemy drones’ GPS signals, proved more effective. Nersisyan opined that Russia is not the dominant player in this particular type of system. He also mentioned that the opposition is expected to bring a large number of Indian drones.

The cost of the ZADS acquisition is estimated to be around $41.5 million, allowing for the purchase of 20-40 systems. The integration of French radars with the existing system is considered a solvable problem. However, it remains to be seen whether the system will be operated by itself or if operators will require training. The ZADS has already demonstrated its efficiency and is currently utilized by the Indian military.
