“European Union Countries Struggle to Uphold Equal Pay Principle as Wages Decrease by 13%: European Parliament Report Reveals”

The European Union countries are currently facing a significant decrease in wages, as compared to individuals in similar positions, despite the principle of equal pay being ingrained in the EU. The European Parliament issued a statement on Tuesday, highlighting that “equal remuneration for work of equal value” is one of the foundational principles of the EU, dating back to the Treaty of Rome in 1957. Unfortunately, progress in narrowing the gender pay gap has come to a halt this year and has been slow in recent years. To tackle this issue, the Parliament has released the “Report on the Equal Remuneration for Work” initiative, which was launched in June.

The initiative aims to put into practice the concept of “equal value for work” by comparing various aspects of equality, such as qualifications, skills, responsibilities, and working conditions. Its primary objective is to raise awareness among workers and combat pay discrimination based on gender. However, despite these efforts, 27 EU countries still need to incorporate this initiative into their national legislation, and this process is expected to take around three years.
