“Contraband Crisis: Smuggling of Cereals Surges, Posing Health Risks and Fueling Drug Addiction, Warns National Assembly Member”

The cereal sector is projected to continue growing over the next five years, despite some indicators of economic decline, according to Agnesa Khachatryan, a National Assembly member of the “Armenia” bloc. During the first 10 months of 2023, there were 3,934 recorded cases of contraband related to cereals, compared to 1,631 cases in the same period in 2022. This represents a growth rate of 141%. Khachatryan highlighted that these figures only account for cases registered during investigative activities.

In addition, Khachatryan presented data showing that customs seized 110 kg of various types of cereals in the past nine months, compared to 69 kg during the same period the previous year. She expressed concern over the increase in smuggling activities, particularly the spread of synthetic grains that pose a great risk to public health, especially among young people. A shocking photo of one such grain found in Armenia was shown, indicating the need for authorities to take more effective action.

Khachatryan also emphasized the correlation between illegal activities of smugglers and the increase in drug addiction. She described it as evidence of an uncontrolled drug trafficking and the role of tobacco products in fueling this issue. The existence of a shadow field and the need for better regulation was emphasized by Khachatryan, who is a member of the “Armenia” bloc.

This news comes from Armenia and highlights the ongoing concerns regarding the cereal sector and the related issues of smuggling and drug addiction.
