Government Officials and Criminal Group Exposed in Bribery Scandal: 1.7 Million AMD Involved

The National Security Service of the Republic of Armenia has revealed that the head of the municipal administration and the chairman of the interdepartmental committee, T.M., along with employees of the territorial administration and the management body of multi-storey buildings, received financial information about territorial planning through a criminal group operating in the real estate market. The total amount received as a bribe was 1,700,000 AMD.

The anti-corruption committee has stated that the upper level of the central administrative district was involved in these illegal activities. This includes the misuse of official powers, violation of contract requirements, mismanagement of construction processes, and providing advice to organizations in exchange for financial benefits. On July 11, 2023, they received a salary of 1,000,000 AMD.

Furthermore, T.M. received financial benefits from N.A. and A.A. through their privileged relations. These benefits allowed them to avoid inspections and penalties for unauthorized advertising structures and gas connections in Yerevan. The total amount received in July and August 2023 was 700,000 AMD.

On November 13, 2023, two officials and two individuals involved in these illegal activities were arrested. T.M. and A.A. have been charged with corruption offenses as stipulated in Article 435(2)(1), (2), and (3) of the Criminal Code of Armenia. The court has initiated proceedings to apply preventive measures against the defendants. The investigation is ongoing.
