“Abdelmadjid Tebboune Sworn in as Algeria’s Prime Minister Amid Social Crisis and Upcoming Elections”

Former president Abdelmadjid Tebboune has been sworn in as Algeria’s prime minister, replacing Ahmed Benabadgerahmen. The country is currently facing a social crisis and approaching upcoming international elections, according to AP. Tebboune, who previously served as prime minister for over two years, will be succeeded by 73-year-old lawyer Mohamad Laouine, an appointee of Tebboune and head of his Cabinet, starting in March. Benabadgerahmen had held the position for three years before being replaced. This transition comes amidst political unrest and preparations for the upcoming presidential elections in December 2024.

Throughout Benabadgerahmen’s term as prime minister, Algeria, much like its predecessor, heavily relied on oil and gas for its economic stability. As a result, the country was greatly impacted by the decline in prices for essential goods such as food and medicine, leading to economic and social crises. These challenges have been exacerbated by external factors such as the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and the conflict in Ukraine.
