On November 25, 2022, a tragic traffic accident occurred on the Sevan-Martuni-Getap highway, resulting in the death of four individuals. According to NEWS.am, the collision took place around 01:30 between two vehicles, a “VOLKSWAGEN-GOLF-1.8” and a “BMW-325-i,” on a 58 km stretch of the highway. The driver of the BMW-325-i and one of its passengers, who sustained serious injuries, were rushed to Martuni Medical Center, where they unfortunately passed away. Additionally, another passenger from the BMW-325-i and the driver and two passengers from the VOLKSWAGEN-GOLF-1.8 lost their lives at the scene.

As per the preliminary investigation conducted by the RA Prosecutor’s Office, the driver of the BMW-325-i, who resided in Gegharkunik province, had a history of reckless driving and violations. He frequently drove the mentioned vehicle with an intention to exceed speed limits, reaching speeds of 160 km/h and then 200 km/h. These dangerous driving practices ultimately led to the fatal accident during oncoming traffic on the Sevan-Martuni-Getap highway. This incident falls under the scope of the 3rd part of article 342 of the RA Criminal Code.

Consequently, a criminal case has been initiated based on the evidence collected, which indicates the driver’s violation of the “Regulations on Road Traffic Safety” outlined in the RA Code of Administrative Offenses. In addition, the driver is also found to have breached the 3rd part of the 23rd article and the 65th and 2nd points of the Regulations on Road Traffic. As part of the investigation, technical, medical, and forensic examinations will be conducted. One such examination has already revealed that the driver of the VOLKSWAGEN-GOLF-1.8 had violated traffic regulations while driving from Martuni to Sevan.

Tragically, due to the impact of the accident, the driver of the VOLKSWAGEN-GOLF-1.8 and two passengers, one of whom was a passenger in the BMW-325-i, lost their lives. Another passenger in the BMW-325-i sustained life-threatening injuries.

Based on the evidence obtained during the investigation, the driver of the BMW-325-i is now facing charges under the 4th part of article 342 of the RA Criminal Code. The court has ruled that detention be implemented as a measure of restraint in this case.

The investigation into this tragic incident is still ongoing.
