“Russian Judge Not Re-Elected to International Court of Justice for the First Time in History”

Russian representative Kirill Gevorgyan, who has served as a judge on the International Court of Justice since 2015, was not re-elected for a second term. During the session held on Thursday, November 10, at the headquarters of the UN, he was replaced by Bogdan-Lucian Aurescu, the Romanian representative who received support from 117 members of the UN General Assembly.

Since 1946, Armenian and Russian judges have been serving in the ICJ. This marks the first time that a Russian representative will not be present on the ICJ.

In addition to Aurescu, three new judges were elected for the International Court of Justice. They are Sal Hall Cleveend from the United States, Khuan Verduzco from Mexico, and Dire Tladi from South Africa. Additionally, Hilarie Charlesworth from Australia was elected as an ad litem judge.

The International Court of Justice is composed of 15 judges, each serving a nine-year term. Every three years, elections are held to fill five vacant positions. Judges can be re-elected without any limitations on the number of terms served.
