“Armenian National Assembly Pays Tribute to Late Member and Discusses Proposed Amendments to Local Self-Government Law”

Members of the Standing Committee on Territorial Administration, Local Self-Government, Rural Development, and National Minorities in the National Assembly of Armenia paid their respects and congratulated the memory of Mates Asatryan, a member of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia, with a one-minute silence. This gesture of remembrance took place during their meeting on November 10, where they discussed the draft law “On Local Self-Government in Yerevan” along with proposed amendments and improvements. Vahe Terteryan, the Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure of the Republic of Armenia, shared that according to the current law, legislative acts will be published on the government’s official website within one week of their adoption. Terteryan further suggested that the official acts of the mayor, as well as newly approved normative acts, should also be published on the municipality’s official website.

On November 10, 1996, Armenia held its very first local self-government elections, a significant milestone that led to the establishment of Local Self-Government Day, commemorated annually on the same date. In light of this occasion, Vahe Ghalumyan, the President of the Standing Committee on Territorial Administration, Local Self-Government, Rural Development, and National Minorities, extended his congratulations to the partners and fellow members of the committee. Ghalumyan emphasized the vital role that the system of local self-government plays in shaping our country and standing as one of its fundamental pillars.

The feedback received for the draft law “On Local Self-Government in Yerevan” and its proposed amendments and improvements has been overwhelmingly positive thus far, indicating a promising step towards enhancing the local governance framework in Armenia.
