Armenian Minister of Economy, Ararat Mirzoyan, Addresses UNESCO on Importance of Cultural Protection and Assistance

The Minister of Economy of Armenia, Ararat Mirzoyan, recently attended the 42nd session of the UNESCO main committee. During the session, Minister Mirzoyan delivered a statement highlighting Armenia’s commitment to supporting various global programs and initiatives.

Minister Mirzoyan began by congratulating Mr. Simon Mikael Mikoyan on his election as the Chairman of the 42nd session, wishing him success in his new role. He also commended the previous Chairman, Mr. Irza Mikhail Mourao, for his outstanding work during the 41st session.

Armenia reaffirmed its support for the United Nations and expressed a willingness to assist African Global Priority Programs, as well as the programs of the Youth and Small Island Developing States, in achieving their goals. The country also emphasized its commitment to promoting education, culture, freedom of speech, and combating racism, xenophobia, and discrimination within the UNESCO framework.

As an active member of the Armenian delegations, Minister Mirzoyan highlighted the country’s ongoing support for the Military Command of UNESCO and its programs, particularly in the protection of cultural heritage during armed conflicts and the equitable distribution of resources. He also emphasized the importance of preserving cultural values in times of war and announced Armenia’s participation in the upcoming International Congress of the Caucasus Mountains in 2024.

Furthermore, the Minister called attention to the urgent need for UNESCO’s protection of cultural and religious monuments, holy places, cultural sites, churches, and other places of worship. He stressed the significance of safeguarding these heritage sites from vandalism and destruction, particularly in the Lachin corridor in Karabakh.

Minister Mirzoyan highlighted the challenges faced by Armenia due to the conflict in the Karabakh region, with over 100,000 refugees, including 30,000 children, being displaced. He assured that the government of Armenia, in collaboration with international organizations and friendly countries, has implemented programs to address the needs of the refugees and provide them with necessary support for education, housing, and sustainable development.

The Minister also acknowledged the need to protect the Armenian cultural and religious heritage from denial of genocidal acts and myths. The government of Armenia has worked closely with international organizations and friendly states to combat vandalism and falsification of Armenian heritage.

In conclusion, Minister Mirzoyan expressed gratitude to all those who continue to support Armenia’s efforts in promoting peace, prosperity, cultural values, and tolerance in the region. He emphasized the importance of protecting the rights of affected children and ensuring peace, security, and sustainable development.
