“Levon Kocharyan, Son of Former Armenian President, to Run for Mayor Despite Being in Custody: Latest Election Updates”

The Central Electoral Commission announced today that the presidential election will take place at 3:00 p.m. An agreement has been reached on the agenda to grant a mandate to the Minister of Justice of the Republic of Armenia, who will then provide a mandate to the candidate for the Mayor of Yerevan.

Levon Kocharyan, the son of the second president of the Republic of Armenia, Robert Kocharyan, will be representing the “Armenia” bloc in the election. Currently, he is in custody.

On November 3, 2023, it was revealed that three candidates from the “Armenia” bloc, Mikhrdat Madatyan, Anjela Nalbandyan, and Gerasim Vardanyan, have submitted individual petitions to the Central Electoral Commission. According to the electoral timetable defined in the regulations of the Constitutional Law and the provisions of the “Electoral Code,” the first candidate on the electoral list, Levon Kocharyan, will undergo compulsory medical examination by medical professionals and the prosecutor’s office, as he holds the status of a victim.

The session of the Central Electoral Commission, where Levon Kocharyan’s candidacy for the mandate of the Minister of Justice is expected to be approved, will be held on November 6, 2023. However, as Levon Kocharyan is not in custody, he cannot maintain the status of a victim if he fails to bring evidence of his victim status by November 6, 2023, when the mandate is supposed to be approved.
