“Armenia Kicks Off Media Literacy Week: Combating Misinformation in the Digital Age”

The Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports of the Republic of Armenia, in conjunction with the Center for Media Education and Media Literacy, is hosting the “Media Literacy in the Digital Age: Combating Misinformation” week from November 6-12.

According to NEWS.am, the media literacy week officially began today. The event was attended by the Minister of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports, Arayik Harutyunyan, the Director of the Center for Media Education and Media Literacy, Nune Sargsyan, the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Armenia, Michael Johannes Orichter, the Chief of Party of the USAID Good Governance Program in Armenia, John Allelujah, the Head of the Department of Political, Information, and Analytical Sector of the Eastern Partnership, Yan Pleshinger, and the Director of the “Conrad Adenauer Foundation” in Armenia, Stepan Malerius.

In his welcome address, Arayik Harutyunyan highlighted the significance of the media literacy week. He emphasized the importance of media literacy in combating misinformation and promoting critical thinking among the general public, students, teachers, and journalists.

Arayik Harutyunyan also discussed the challenges faced by the education system and emphasized the need for incorporating media literacy into the curriculum. He stated that developing critical thinking skills and teaching students how to effectively utilize their knowledge are essential aspects of education.

Furthermore, he called on the education community to address the challenges of media literacy beyond formal classes and encouraged the organization of extracurricular activities.

During the panel discussion, participants highlighted the significance of the media literacy week and expressed their commitment to contributing actively to the program’s implementation.

It is worth noting that the media literacy week is an international initiative organized annually by UNESCO, in collaboration with government institutions, non-governmental organizations, and media experts from various countries.
