Armenian Government Considers Meghri-Nakhchivan Railway Connection: Studies Underway, Progress Awaited

The Armenian government has conducted studies on the connection between the management of Armenia and the western regions of Azerbaijan in the border area of Meghri. They are discussing the possibilities of building a railroad with Nakhchivan. During a meeting with journalists on October 31, Deputy Prime Minister Tigran Avinyan mentioned that the Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure, Suren Papikyan, has ordered the Architecture and Construction Institute to conduct studies. Papikyan stated that they have already placed an order at the Construction and Design Institute of Architecture and Construction for research to be carried out. They need to know the situation and how much work needs to be done within certain deadlines. However, all this can happen if political, diplomatic, and other initiatives are coordinated. Papikyan explained that when problems arise in their field, there will be large-scale pre-project and construction processes, as he had previously mentioned, and they are waiting for that. It is important to note that on December 14, 2021, Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan announced agreements with the presidents of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, and Russia’s Vladimir Putin to start construction activities in the Meghri-Syunik-Ordubad-Nakhchivan railway. However, in March 2023, Pashinyan stated that the planned construction had not yet been implemented as the deadline for the agreement had passed. Armenia had officially informed about this a week prior to the announcement.
