“Green Transformation Takes Center Stage at Yerevan Conference: Businesses in Armenia Embrace Sustainability and Environmental Consciousness”

A conference entitled “Green Transformation and ESG: International Agenda and Requirements” recently took place in Yerevan. The keynote speaker, John Dean, founder and CEO of the organization “Do Something!”, discussed how businesses can become more environmentally friendly and sustainable. He also addressed energy security and global challenges in Armenia. In 1989, Dean initiated the “Rock Aid Armenia” campaign, aimed at helping the earthquake-stricken country.

During a panel discussion organized by Grant Thornton, Azat Manukyan, a partner at the company, emphasized the growing interest in green transformation and the demand for it. According to him, companies need to understand the importance of being involved in the development and implementation of such initiatives. He added that businesses should be prepared to meet the new standards for sustainable development being implemented in Armenia.

Anna Salomeyan, CEO of Green Rock Management, shared information about a large-scale renewable energy complex under construction in Dilijan. She stated, “We are interested in territorial expansion and have already implemented several projects for the green transformation of Dilijan, including the use of hybrid cars. We want to demonstrate that business can be both profitable and environmentally conscious.”

Irina Zhukova, managing director of Philip Morris International in the region, revealed that the company has invested $20 million in Armenia over the past five years. She expressed satisfaction with Armenia’s strong scientific potential and highlighted the company’s commitment to sustainable development through collaborations with local educational institutions and support for nature preservation.

Raisa Babayan, head of risk management and social responsibility at Araratbank, announced the bank’s signing of a political declaration in the field of green transformation and ESG. She emphasized the financial benefits that can be derived from following these principles, stating, “The financing of Araratbank aims to achieve high sustainability. In our field, there will be no other alternative funding option for at least 10 years. The declaration’s impact on regional development is significant, and Araratbank seeks to collaborate with environmental activists to make tobacco production more accessible for smokers.”
