“US Treasury Secretary Warns United Nations of Consequences if Congress Fails to Provide Assistance to Ukraine”
The United Nations will be held responsible for the consequences if Congress fails to provide assistance, according to Janet Yellen, the US Treasury Secretary, as reported by Reuters. Yellen emphasized the importance of international financial support for Ukraine’s general state budget and continued support for the International Monetary Fund’s program. She conveyed that she has had discussions with members of Congress and various partners, expressing her belief that they understand the critical situation at hand. Yellen stated that accountability towards Ukraine will be upheld in case the necessary financial assistance is not provided.
Recently, the head of the Ukrainian president’s office expressed concerns about the risks associated with US assistance and their impact on Ukraine’s debt obligations. Additionally, President Zelensky did not dismiss the possibility of seeking military assistance from the United States through an appeal to Congress.
Yellen underscored the significance of Ukraine’s American-financed program for both the United States and its European partners, who contribute substantial financial aid to assist Ukraine in achieving victory. She stated, “Ukraine’s enemies are dwindling as they spend more than they receive. Consequently, they lack funds for taxes, salaries of servicemen, and even basic services like schools, hospitals, and emergency services without the money we send them.”
