The court has implemented a judicial measure of preventive detention against Arsen Babayan, the rector of V. Bryusov State Linguistic University, a political scientist, and a member of the Haykazyan Foundation. He is being charged with abuse of official position involving embezzlement in a particularly large amount, as reported by the Haykazyan Foundation.

It is important to note that this criminal act, which is currently being investigated by the court, was committed by Arsen Babayan in his capacity as the deputy responsible for education in the Nagorno-Karabakh issue.

According to Arsen Babayan, he took this step in order to replace an unqualified and ineffective teacher. He claims that his intention was to address a student complaint and write an informative report about the issue.

We firmly believe that this baseless and politically motivated act, as well as the subsequent judicial action, contradict the principles of our fair judiciary and the Constitution. This unprecedented act has no precedent in the history of Armenia’s fair justice system. We are fully convinced that this politically motivated persecution was carried out with the knowledge and consent of Nikol Pashinyan and his associates.

We would like to remind everyone that yesterday the court announced that Arsen Babayan has been interrogated regarding his unauthorized actions outside the framework of English language examinations for students. These irregularities took place between 2019 and 2022. He allegedly accepted complaints from students who did not receive adequate evaluation and provided positive evaluations, replacing negative ones, by using his signature as a member of the commission.
