Armenia Sees Decrease in COVID-19 Cases: More Contagious Omicron Variant Detected

In the past 7 days, Armenia has recorded 71 cases of coronavirus infection, a decrease of 38 cases compared to the previous week’s count of 109, according to the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the Republic of Armenia.

The positive rate of testing for the past week also decreased from 15.6% to 10.7%. Additionally, the reproduction index (Rt=0.82) calculated based on the past 7 days indicates a decreasing trend in the situation.

Armenia is currently dealing with various variants of the virus, including XBB.1.5 (Kraken), XBB.2.3 (Acrux), XBB.1.16 (Arctura), XBB 1.9.1 (Hiperion), FL.1.5.1 (Fornax), EG.5.1 (Eris), and for the first time, the Omicron variant, BA.2.86 (Pirola), and its lineage JN.1 have been detected.

The BA.2.86 variant was first identified globally in August 2023, and further research is ongoing to understand its potential impact on public health. However, there is currently no evidence to suggest that this variant contributes to an increase in transmissions or hospitalizations.
