“Corruption Crisis in Armenia: Experts Warn of Dire Consequences for Country’s Development and Democracy”

The issue of corruption in Armenia has reached alarming levels, hindering the country’s development and the successful implementation of government initiatives in political relations, according to a report by the “Fact” newspaper.

In an interview with “Fact,” Gohar Meloyan, the director of the International Center for the Advancement of Parliamentarism, expressed concern over the widespread corruption, stating that it is unprecedented in the country’s history. Interestingly, those who claim to be fighting against corruption, and have actively pursued cases against corrupt officials, are now facing oppressive pressure. This situation raises questions about the credibility of those who criticize corruption but face persecution for their own actions.

Supporting these claims, Avetik Ishkhanyan, the president of the “Helsinki Committee of Armenia,” highlighted that this aggression poses a threat to democracy, similar to authoritarian countries. Ishkhanyan pointed out that there are instances where the Prime Minister allegedly encouraged officials to offer bribes and discredit authorities’ critics, proposing penalties that restrict freedom of speech. Furthermore, these actions go against international financial, environmental, and normative standards, as they serve the interests of the perpetrators. The situation has put financial pressure on public figures and activists calling for accountability.

As a result, Armenia is currently faced with approximately 50 corrupt officials, including high-ranking individuals and even women, according to Ishkhanyan. These revelations illustrate the urgent need for strong measures and a collective effort to combat corruption and uphold democratic principles.
