“Heritage in Ruins: Ghazanchetsots Cathedral’s Dome Damaged by Blue Bullets, Threatening Carved Stones”

Armenia’s heritage watch organization, Caucasus Heritage Watch, has reported that the historic dome of the Ghazanchetsots Cathedral in Shushi has been damaged between October 5th and November 3rd. The damage is believed to have been caused by blue bullets, which were fired from the east of the main church. According to a statement by the organization, the carved stones of the cathedral are also at risk.

Just a few days ago, Caucasus Heritage Watch revealed that Azerbaijanis had invaded Shushi through the city’s historic dome, which is famously known as the “Gates of Yerevan”. This marks the 5th Armenian cathedral to suffer damage during the conflict in 2020. The Cathedral of Holy Savior and Sghnakh in Shushi, as well as the churches of Vazgenashen and Mets Tagher in the vicinity, have also been affected.
