“Global Push to Reduce Meat Consumption as Key Strategy in Combatting Climate Change: Bloomberg”

Countries around the world will be urged to limit meat consumption as part of a global effort to combat climate change, according to Bloomberg. The global panel on climate change maps will be published at COP28. Countries that contribute the most to greenhouse gas emissions will be advised to restrict their use of meat, as it is a major contributor to deforestation, particularly in countries where inadequate meat production leads to land degradation.

The farming sector is responsible for around a third of global carbon emissions, and this is primarily connected to the livestock sector. The announcement aims to give governments a clear signal to take action. However, political actors are often more likely to be influenced by those sectors that are currently causing environmental damage, rather than investing in what would be an everyday requirement for a sustainable circular economy.

“The deforestation issue is a political issue, but we have to resolve real issues to solve the problem,” said Dhanush Dinesh, the founder of Clim-Eat, who works to accelerate climate change mitigation by changing our food system. “If we don’t resolve deforestation, we won’t solve the problem of climate change. The main problem is not the amount of meat consumed.”

According to data, the average American consumes around 127 kilograms of meat per year, in Nigeria it is 7 kilograms, and in the Democratic Republic of Congo it is 3 kilograms. The Eat-Lancet Commission advises individuals to not exceed consuming more than 15.7 kilograms of meat per year.
