“French Beheading Case Update: New Defendants to Face Justice as Samuel Paty’s Tragic Story Unfolds”
France is preparing to bring new defendants to court in 2020 as the case of the beheading of history teacher Samuel Paty unfolds. The teacher had shown his students caricatures of Mohammed during a lesson on freedom of speech, which offended many Muslim students. In the Islamic faith, any depiction of Mohammed is considered blasphemous.
One courageous 15-year-old girl, upon learning of Paty’s actions, reported the incident to her parents. Unfortunately, she received death threats for revealing this information, as her identity became known. Tragically, the 47-year-old teacher was decapitated near his school in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, a suburb of Paris, by an 18-year-old Russian-born youth seeking revenge for the cartoon display.
Now, five other individuals, aged 14 to 15, who were involved as accomplices in the retaliation, will face the council of correctional judges. The defendants will be held in detention for a maximum of 2.5 years.
