“Azerbaijan’s Authorities Exploit Misinformation to Escalate Violations, Warns Former Human Rights Defender”
Former human rights defender of Armenia, Arman Tatoyan, has raised concerns about a new wave of wide-scale violations by the authorities of Azerbaijan, using misinformation as a tool. According to Tatoyan, the Azerbaijani authorities are spreading false information with an Armenian context to create new demands and military operations. They are presenting fictional examples of crimes committed by Armenians, referring to them as “Armenian crimes” and “atrocities.” The Azerbaijani government is intensifying its study of the public and political life of Armenia, preparing new documents that include fabricated examples of crimes such as the “genocide” and “cleansing” of the Armenian population in Azerbaijan.
This type of political activity is not limited to Azerbaijan alone, as it is being carried out domestically and internationally. Its aim is to promote propaganda of hatred, targeting not only peaceful coexistence and mutual understanding but also the degradation of these values. These actions build upon the human rights issues of the initial wave, this time with a specific focus on political programs and military aggression. All of this lays the groundwork for the so-called “representations and territorial demands” within the historical and settlement demands of Western Azerbaijan, also referred to as the “Azerbaijani West” of Armenia. Additionally, it supports the destruction of cultural heritage in Artsakh and demographic changes in the population.
It is crucial to address these developments and raise awareness about the manipulation of information that is fueling tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The international community should condemn these deliberate attempts to distort the truth and incite hatred. Promoting peaceful coexistence and mutual understanding should be central to resolving these conflicts, and the spread of false narratives must be confronted and exposed.
Arman Tatoyan’s warning sheds light on the dangerous tactics employed by the Azerbaijani authorities. It is important for human rights organizations and media outlets to expose these violations and ensure that the truth prevails. The world must not turn a blind eye to the abuse of information and propaganda that is contributing to further escalation and hostility in the region. It is only through an honest examination of the facts and a commitment to justice and peace that progress can be made in resolving the issues between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
