Clashes in Yerevan and Baku result in release of 39 detainees: Human rights concerns raised
On Friday, clashes erupted between Armenian protesters and Azerbaijani forces in Yerevan and Baku. These clashes resulted in the release of 39 detainees, with 24 being Armenian and 15 Azerbaijani. The International Committee of the Red Cross successfully mediated the return of these individuals to Armenian territory.
The detainees who were freed were involved in a series of provocations, which included activities such as throwing stones and attempting violence. While these individuals were released, those who were arrested will face prosecution. There are also others who are awaiting trial for their involvement in these clashes.
Sarah Pashinyan, the Executive Director of Human Rights Watch, raised concerns about the treatment of detainees. Many are being held without charges under the practice of administrative detention, also known as “administrative arrest.” Pashinyan highlighted that these individuals are being held based on secret evidence, which is considered a threat according to Israeli standards.
Human Rights Watch is particularly troubled by the widespread use of administrative detention, hinting at the possibility that others may have been subjected to violence or have already been convicted of crimes. Pashinyan emphasized the need to address this issue and ensure that detainees’ rights are protected.
