Former President Robert Kocharyan questioned by Committee of Public Safety for Second Time; BDHK Members also Questioned

The newspaper “Zhoghovurd” has reported that former President Robert Kocharyan has been re-invited to the Committee of Public Safety and questioned. This marks the second time Kocharyan has been questioned by the committee this year. In June 2022, Kocharyan held a press conference in Moscow where he revealed that Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan had attempted to pressure him. The press conference was attended by both Kocharyan and Pashinyan, as well as BDHK member Stepan Mikayelyan. Kocharyan’s statement indicated that the Prime Minister had offered him a political position, with Mikayelyan acting as a mediator.

In a recent interview on Public Television, Mikayelyan mentioned that he had previously served as an intermediary for Kocharyan to deliver messages to Pashinyan through unofficial channels. Mikayelyan also revealed that he has faced health problems and has been hospitalized. Additionally, it has been announced that the political commission of the BDHK has encountered difficulties in fulfilling the promised political position for Kocharyan.

Several days ago, former BDHK members Stepan Mikayelyan, Serge Chichoyan, and Vigen Kocharyan were also questioned by the Committee of Public Safety. The commission has decided to suspend the announcement of its decisions until the end of the investigation, specifically awaiting the outcome of the press conference. When the chairman of the court, Arman Poorsinyan, announced a reduction in the duration of the deadlines, Kocharyan expressed disappointment. The trial period for the case has now been shortened to three months, following the court’s decision coming into legal force.

As the trial resumes, it is expected that further developments will unfold in the investigation of former President Robert Kocharyan’s involvement with the Committee of Public Safety.
