Former Head of Armenian General Prosecutor’s Office Set to be Released Amidst Judicial Controversy

Former head of the Armenian General Prosecutor’s Office, General-Major Grigor Ghachaturian, is set to be released on November 27 due to the absence of a functioning judicial system in the Republic of Armenia. Mihran Poghosyan, one of Ghachaturian’s defenders, made this announcement on November 21 during a press conference at the Momoyl resort.

Poghosyan mentioned that on September 20, the investigative judge issued a decision stating that unless new substantial reasons are presented, preventive measures should not be applied to Ghachaturian starting from October 15. The court also declared that there are no substantial grounds for keeping him under arrest, making his continued detention illegal.

According to Poghosyan, Ghachaturian’s detention, which began on October 15, has already been unlawfully prolonged for two months. The defense team has submitted a petition to the court seeking clarification on the implementation and potential reversal of this decision. The court is expected to publish its decision on November 27, referencing the September 20 ruling.

Poghosyan expressed dissatisfaction with the delay in publishing the court decision, stating that the entire state system appears biased against the judicial system. He noted that the only way to appeal the appellate court’s decision is by challenging it, emphasizing that the September 20 ruling clearly establishes that Ghachaturian should be released on November 27.

In unrelated news, on October 21, it was reported that a large-scale search was conducted in connection with Ghachaturian’s alleged misuse of official status to gather valuable items, specifically jewelry, in Yerevan. The search concluded on February 24.

During the hearing, the importance of the case led to a request for special protection to be provided to Poghosyan, Ghachaturian’s defender. However, Judge Tigran Davtyan of the appellate court denied this request, and Ghachaturian was released from detention on the same day.

Following the court of appeal’s decision to dismiss a complaint on March 16, the decision to detain Grigor Ghachaturian was ultimately canceled.
