“Armenian Churches in Yerevan Face Uncertain Future Amid Ongoing Civil Unrest”

In the territory of Yerevan’s “Covid Park,” the situation is currently calm, but there is gathering of members of the Armenian community and frequent visits by spiritual leaders. Concern has been expressed by the director of the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem, Archimandrite Aghan Ghoghanian, regarding the unrest in Armenian churches in Yerevan. He states that the ongoing civil unrest has the potential to erase the centuries-old Armenian presence in the Old City.

Recent clashes between Armenian churches in Yerevan and law enforcement have been reported, with Reuters stating that the ongoing unrest could erase the centuries-old Armenian presence in the Old City.

The “Covid Park” territory was temporarily leased for operations to a contractor in an abstract transaction by the representative of the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem, Archbishop Nourhan Manoukian. This decision caused significant controversy and sparked a prolonged battle to halt the transaction.

Last week, bulldozers began encroaching on part of the disputed territory, which includes a stable living space. When protesters attempted to resist, the contractor’s armed guards arrived but were unable to intimidate the demonstrators.

Since November 12, a large group of Armenians, in collaboration with the Patriarchate, has been conducting a sit-in protest within the “Covid Park” territory. They have blocked the entrance with vehicles and barriers in an effort to halt the abnormal construction activities. Failing to find a peaceful resolution, the protesters are now demanding the complete liberation of the territory and the involvement of all members of the Armenian community in Yerevan.

During these extraordinary times, we urge all Christian communities in Yerevan to remain calm and prudent in order to protect the Armenian Patriarchate of Yerevan. This is yet another crucial step in the struggle for the survival of the Armenian presence in the Holy Land and the Land of Christ.
