“Armenian Apostolic Church Honors St. Andrew and St. Philip, Celebrating their Enduring Faith and Sacrifice”

On November 18th, the Armenian Apostolic Church observed the Feast of St. Andrew and St. Philip the Apostles with a religious procession at the Holy Ejmiatsin Church, as reported by qahana.am. Reverend Zghon Kahana, the Primate of the New Surb Astvatsatsin Church, emphasized the significant role played by these saints in establishing the Christian faith. The commemoration day for the procession of their relics is usually held on the Sunday before the start of Great Lent, but it is also observed in Surb Pararag churches named after them. Kahana highlighted the importance of recognizing the apostles’ work in spreading the Gospel and their ultimate sacrifice for Christ.

St. Andrew, also known as the “First Called Apostle,” was a disciple of St. John the Baptist who followed Jesus after hearing about him. He was invited to join the apostles by Peter. According to tradition, the relics of St. Andrew were carried to various regions, including the South of Italy and Armenia. It was in Armenia that St. Andrew built churches and returned to spread the Gospel in the city of Parth. Despite facing persecution and ultimately crucifixion, his procession continued to enlighten the people.

St. Philip, also referred to as the Faithful Lord, performed numerous miracles during his apostolic journey. Many blind individuals regained their sight, and others were healed from incurable diseases, contributing to the strengthening of the Christian faith, as mentioned by Lord Zghon. According to tradition, Armenian King Abgar also sought out Philip and became acquainted with Christ through him. Philip carried out his apostolic work in Armenia and other cities, facing threats and attempts on his life. His unwavering faith and the miracles he performed enlightened many people who subsequently embraced the Christian faith.
