“New Amendments in Armenian Labor Code to Enhance Education-Labor Market Nexus through Internship Reforms”

Starting from December 1, amendments related to internships at educational institutions will be implemented in the labor code of the Republic of Armenia. The Ministry of Education aims to ensure a strong connection between education and the labor market, improve the organization of internships, and facilitate the integration of young people into the workforce. These changes also intend to help individuals familiarize themselves with labor market practices and easily integrate into the job market.

Employers have the authority to determine the conditions for individuals to participate in internships. According to the new regulations, an intern is defined as someone who engages in educational programs, whether at the primary, secondary, or higher education level, either during their studies or after completing their studies, with the aim of acquiring practical knowledge, skills, or professional experience in their field.

Furthermore, the following rules have been mandated:

  • The employer may organize a work practice for a period of up to 2 months, with a maximum of 1 instance, by signing an internship agreement, without extending the period of internship rights.
  • The number of interns in relation to the total number of employees working at the employer’s establishment cannot exceed 10% at any given time.
  • Internships are considered as part of work, and the duration of the internship should not exceed 5 days per week, 4 hours per day, or 20 hours per week, ensuring the interests and safety of the intern.
  • The timeframe allocated for conducting the work practice chosen by the employer is not considered as actual work for the intern.
  • The issue of internship remuneration is determined through mutual agreement between the parties involved.

These amendments aim to enhance the effectiveness and fairness of internships in Armenia, providing opportunities for students and young professionals to gain valuable practical experience in their chosen fields. By bridging the gap between education and the labor market, these changes will contribute to the overall growth and development of the workforce in the country.
