“Sevani Lake Restocked with 100,000 Gegharkunik Fish in a Remarkable Conservation Effort”
A fish farm called “Sevani Ishkhan” CJSC has opened at Sevani Lake in the village of Karachaghbyur of the Vardenis community in the Gegharkunik region. The farm released 100,000 “Gegharkunik” fish weighing an average of 3.9 grams. The event was attended by Aram Meimaryan, the Governor of the Shirak region, Vahan Zaryan, the Governor of Gegharkunik region, representatives from the Ministry of Nature Protection, the Government of Armenia, the Gegharkunik region administration, and representatives from “Sevani Ishkhan” CJSC.
Tigran Vardanyan, the director of “Sevani Ishkhan” CJSC, stated that this is the second event of its kind and that, in total, 230,000 “Gegharkunik” fish will be released into Sevani Lake in 2023. The first event took place in 2023 when the company released 130,000 fish. It took them a year to reach 100,000 fish for the second event, and they plan to increase the numbers in the coming years.
Aram Meimaryan, the Governor of the Shirak region, mentioned that the current program of the Shirak region administration focuses on preserving and restoring Sevani Ishkhan and the lake’s ecological system. They are also working on resolving water and biological resource-related issues in Lake Sevani.
