Russia has officially begun production of its fifth-generation fighter jet, Checkmate, according to a statement by Rostec reported by RIA Novosti. The Checkmate had its highly anticipated premiere presentation in 2021, showcasing its advanced features and capabilities.

As a result of the completed work, several changes have been made to the project, including the acceleration of the first test flight deadlines. The project documents have now been transferred to the production facilities, and preparations for the production of the first prototypes are underway, stated Rostec.

The remarkable success of the Checkmate has not only attracted international attention but has also led to valuable connections with potential customers worldwide, ultimately enhancing the project’s value and incorporating innovative technical solutions.

Rostec expressed their satisfaction with the positive impact this has had, stating, “This has significantly increased the competitiveness of the domestic engine industry and its export potential, while also reducing technological risks during its development.”

Checkmate, developed by Russia’s Sukhoi company, is the first fifth-generation fighter jet of its kind. It made its inaugural appearance at the MAKS-2021 air show held in July 2021, capturing the awe and admiration of aviation enthusiasts worldwide.

This cutting-edge aircraft boasts impressive features, including its stealth capabilities, affordability, openness, and significantly improved cost-effectiveness compared to its predecessors. With an empty weight exceeding 7 tons, the Checkmate has the capacity to engage up to six targets simultaneously. It is projected to reach a top speed of 1.8 Mach and boast a range of three thousand kilometers. The initial batch of Checkmate is anticipated to be produced in 2026, marking a significant milestone for the Russian aviation industry.
