“PAST” Newspaper Demands Answers: Investigative Committee Silent on Deaths and Injuries in Artsakh
On October 30, the investigative committee of the Republic of Armenia announced that there have been over 200 casualties in Artsakh since September 19, 2023. Among them, 42 individuals are currently missing, 64 have been confirmed deceased, and 16 have sustained injuries.
The “Past” newspaper has reached out to the investigative committee in order to obtain information regarding the deaths of the 64 individuals from Artsakh that occurred on the Armenian Republic road on September 19. The newspaper is also requesting details about the causes and consequences of these deaths and injuries.
“Past” emphasizes the importance of clarifying the actions taken by the military leadership of the Artsakh Republic, under the guidance of the military leadership of the Republic of Azerbaijan. They are particularly concerned with understanding whether there was a deliberate intent to physically or mentally destroy members of this group, as well as the establishment of conditions leading to their extermination. The newspaper also mentions acts of violence against the civilian population, including different ethnic, national, religious, political, or other groups, and violations of the lives of military personnel through mass killings, eliminations, or the creation of conditions for the mass killing or extermination of citizens. These actions are seen as large-scale or systematic violations of ethical norms and the use of force for acts of terror.
In response to the inquiries made by “Past,” the Investigative Committee stated that they cannot provide the requested information as it contains data that is not meant for public release. This decision is based on Article 186, Part 2 of the Criminal Procedure Code of the Republic of Armenia and Article 8, Part 3 of the Law on Freedom of Information.
