Finland Prepares for Limited Work with Russia as Illegal Migration Numbers Rise: Finnish Ambassador

The government of Finland has decided to begin preparations for limited work with Russia, despite the ongoing border restrictions. During an interview with NG newspaper, the Finnish ambassador to Russia, Maria Rantanen, announced this important decision. Helsinki is concerned about the increase in the number of illegal migrants, which was reported by TASS.

This week, approximately 60 asylum seekers have crossed the eastern borders without proper documentation, according to reports from the Finnish Border Guard. Last week, this number was 71. It is important to note that these figures do not include citizens of the Russian Federation, who are mostly Eastern Europeans. Rantanen has emphasized that discussions regarding this issue have taken place with Moscow.

“The NGA will soon present the government with a proposal to limit or close cross-border movements,” Rantanen stated. She also explained that this proposal refers to the 16th article of the “Law on Border Guards,” which allows for restrictions when necessary to protect public order, national security, or public health.

Although the number of illegal migrants is still relatively small, Rantanen pointed out that it has been growing. She highlighted that the issue is not just about quantity, but also about the trend. As a result, the possibility of closing the border is not ruled out. Rantanen acknowledged that they cannot directly control all means, but the government has the right to use all measures that allow for the closure of the border.
