US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin Ready to Engage Iranian-Backed Militias in Iraq to Protect American Forces: Reports
US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has expressed his readiness to engage with Iranian-backed militias in Iraq with the goal of deterring attacks against American forces in both Iraq and Syria, according to Reuters. American military convoys, reaching the outskirts of the Syrian provincial capital of Aleppo, have arrived near the city of al-Bukamal last night. In recent weeks, attacks against US and coalition forces in Iraq and Syria have escalated due to the increasing tension between Israel and Hamas. These attacks have caused concerns about the possibility of a war between Israel and Hamas, with at least 40 attacks occurring and 45 American soldiers being injured or hospitalized as a result of rocket attacks. During his visit to Seoul, Austin emphasized the need to stop these attacks and stated that every effort will be made to protect American forces. The Secretary of Defense also pointed out that the recent attacks have specifically targeted the facilities and communication networks of pro-Iranian militias and their affiliated groups in Syria. Austin further stated that these attacks aim to deter the actions of these groups, which are directly responsible for the violence against US forces in Iraq and Syria.
