Turkish Judiciary to Extend Working Hours in Response to Backlog of Cases: President Erdogan Takes Action

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced that the judiciary can extend the daily working hours of the court in order to resolve the backlog of cases between the country’s two highest courts, according to Reuters.

This announcement comes in response to the ongoing disagreement between the Constitutional Court and the High Council of Judges and Prosecutors, which has been worsening since last month when Judge Cihan Atila, a member of the Constitutional Court, called for the suspension of his duties.

“It is difficult to perform judicial functions (Constitutional Court) in an adversarial manner,” said Erdogan upon his return from Saudi Arabia. “However, work is not being completed after the completion of the necessary changes to the judicial system regarding petitions for dismissal,” he added.

The statement refers to the recent decision of the Constitutional Court to inform the Supreme Court that it is unconstitutional.

Yesterday evening, the Supreme Court, the highest court in the country, rejected the request of the Constitutional Court, leading to tensions between the two institutions.

All stakeholders have criticized the allegations associated with the complaints made by Cihan Atila, which they claim have become political and have created the largest public protest against his office in the last two decades.

In response to the decision of the Constitutional Court, the Republican People’s Party (CHP), the main opposition party, held a meeting.

Erdogan said that he will not be a party to the conflict, but will act as a mediator. He said that the dispute shows the need for a new constitutional amendment that will resolve its tenurial jurisdiction next year.
