“Yerevan Court Extends Detention for Main Suspect in Pemzashen Mass Murder Case, Defense’s Request Denied”

The Yerevan General Jurisdiction Court, under the leadership of presiding judge Artush Gabrielyan, has made a decision regarding the Pemzashen mass murder case. The main participant and organizer of the mass killing will have the duration of their temporary detention extended in order to facilitate the investigation of the case.

Judge Artush Gabrielyan has announced that the detention measure for the perpetrators of the mass murder will be extended for three months, until February 11, 2024. The court has rejected the defense’s request to change the detention measure for the suspects involved in the mass murder.

Garik Galikyan, the representative of the victim, has requested that the injured party be allowed to present their own expert opinion to support their claim for material compensation. The trial has been adjourned, and the next hearing is scheduled for January 18, 2024. Please note that the court will be located in the field in December.

On November 9, the residents of Pemzashen village discovered the bodies of Zarin Meliksetyan, aged 31, her 12-year-old daughter, and 8-year-old son. They were victims of a brutal murder. The spouse of the murdered woman, Vruyr Barseghyan, aged 32, and his brother, Arkaadi Barseghyan, aged 41, were arrested in Shirak province.

Vruyr Barseghyan has accepted the accusation and confessed to his guilt, providing detailed information. However, Arkadi Barseghyan has not accepted the accusation and has stated that he was not involved in the crime. Both perpetrators have children. The victim’s sister had been working in the Russian Federation as a seasonal worker and returned due to the tragic incident.

According to the preliminary conclusion of the coroner, the motive behind the crime was domestic violence.

Arkadi Barseghyan has been charged with murder under Article 155, Part 2, in conjunction with Part 6, Part 8, and Part 13 of the Criminal Code of Armenia. Vruyr Barseghyan has been charged with murder under Article 155, Part 2, in conjunction with Part 8 and Part 13 of the Criminal Code of Armenia.
