Russia Withdraws from CFE Agreement in Europe, Prompting Concerns over European Security
The Russian Foreign Ministry has announced that Russia will be withdrawing from the Agreement on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE) in response to Turkey’s violation of the agreement on external actions. This decision comes as the European security architecture, which the CFE Agreement is a part of, has been deteriorating since 2007. The implementation of the agreement has become virtually impossible due to Russia’s forced withdrawal on November 7, 2023, when Turkey and other parties failed to fulfill their obligations.
Experts suggest that this decision may be reversible, unlike the previous withdrawal. Russia’s withdrawal from the CFE Agreement is based on legal grounds and fundamental principles of territorial integrity and national security. These principles are crucial in ensuring parity, transparency, and predictability of military forces. Any renovation within the European security architecture must be built on these principles.
It is important to continue discussing this issue with international partners during this critical period. With the increased threats of terrorism, proliferation, and non-proliferation in the field of disarmament, international security has become more important than ever.
According to news outlets in Armenia, the announcement of Russia’s withdrawal from the CFE Agreement has been made.
