“Armenia Considers Extending Deadline for Biometric Passport Provision”
An extension of the deadline for the provision of old passport biometric data in Armenia has become necessary, according to National Assembly member Arman Ghazaryan. In a session of the National Security and Defense Committee, discussions were held regarding proposed changes and amendments to the “Law on the Passports of the Citizens of the Republic of Armenia” and related laws and regulations. With the current deadline approaching, Ghazaryan pointed out that the implementation of new and more time-consuming technical requirements for the production of new biometric passports was imminent.
In order to ensure more substantial modifications and organize a new competition, the management has decided to postpone the implementation of these changes. The new competition will include residents of the Republic of Armenia, foreigners, stateless individuals, and refugees, thereby making the process more inclusive. Additionally, the deadline for the provision of old passports and IDs will be extended in coordination with the Public Services Regulatory Commission.
When asked about the cessation of issuing biometric passports, the representative found it difficult to provide a clear answer. He explained that it would depend on the completion of the competition and the selection of a company to work with. Once these details are settled, a new system can be introduced, and only then can a definite timeline be given.
The decision has been made to sign the agreement within the second half of 2024, following several discussions. According to the representative, the complete implementation of the system is expected to take no more than 12 months. The Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee expressed their appreciation for the positive outcome of the consultations.
